Hugo Broos, the head coach of South Africa’s senior men’s national team, has stated that if his team fails to beat South Sudan at home in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, he will resign.

Bafana Bafana will play Uganda on Friday in Kampala before returning home to face South Sudan on Tuesday, November 19, 2024.

The two games will provide an opportunity for South Africa to qualify for the Afcon tournament, which will be held in Morocco next year.

Bafana Bafana are in Group K with eight points, two behind Group leaders Uganda, who have ten.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Broos stated that if the team loses at home against South Sudan, he will step down as head coach.

“If we lose both games, five minutes after the game I’m on the flight to Belgium. You can be sure of it.

“If we can’t win, okay, Uganda away is tough, but at home against South Sudan, I tell you I will immediately take a flight and you will never see me again,” he said.

However, the Belgian tactician is still hopeful of a better result.

“We can end 2024 on a fantastic note. We started the year very well with the bronze medal and it would be nice to end it with qualification for Afcon again,” added Broos.

South Africa only needs three points to secure a ticket to Morocco 2025.

In the same group, Congo Brazzaville are also still in the running; sitting third with four points, a win over already-eliminated South Sudan will put them in a good position to compete for second place in their final match against Uganda.
