Zambian striker Kingston Mutandwa, who is on loan at Austrian side SV Ried from Cagliari, has broken his silence following his omission from Zambia’s final squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mutandwa initially missed the November international friendlies against South Africa and Angola for unspecified reasons before also being left out of the final AFCON squad.
Earlier, he missed Zambia’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Morocco in September, citing “personal reasons,” and was subsequently not called up for the final two World Cup qualifiers against Tanzania and Niger under then head coach Avram Grant.
Despite his absence, Mutandwa has been one of the most in-form Zambian players abroad this season, scoring eight goals in 15 appearances in the Austrian league.

His omission from the final AFCON squad has attracted criticism from some fans, who questioned the decision of head coach Moses Sichone.
Mutandwa speaks out
The former Athletico Lusaka striker has since addressed the situation, stating: “Representing my country has always been an honour and something I carry deep in my heart. Unfortunately injuries are part of football, and this period has kept me away even when my heart truly wanted to be there,” he wrote on his Facebook page.
“I’ve seen the different reactions, the doubts the questions, and also the messages of support and I sincerely appreciate everyone who has taken the time to understand my situation and wish me well In my full focus in recovery staying professional and coming back stronger when the time is right,” he added.
“I want to wish the team all the best as they go into this tournament and I’ll be supporting them with pride. Thank you to everyone who continues to stand by me through this journey.”
Mutandwa made his debut for the Zambia national team on 11 June 2024 in a World Cup qualifier against Tanzania at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium. He replaced Evans Kangwa in the 87th minute, as Zambia lost 0–1.
The only other match he has played was against the Ivory Coast, where he played 15 minutes in a 2-0 defeat back in September.
