RABAT—Morocco began their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a 2-0 victory over Comoros at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah in Rabat on Sunday.

Second-half goals from Brahim Diaz and Ayoub El Kaabi secured the win after a tight opening period. Diaz broke the deadlock in the 55th minute, finishing from close range after being left unmarked inside the box following a pass from Noussair Mazraoui.

Morocco doubled their advantage 20 minutes later when El Kaabi produced a spectacular overhead kick, capping a sustained spell of pressure by the hosts.

Comoros defended bravely in the first half and threatened on the counterattack but were unable to convert their chances.

The Atlas Lions were also forced into an early change when captain Romain Saïss was withdrawn with a hamstring injury in the 13th minute.

“The opening game is always difficult but we came good in the second half,” said Morocco coach Walid Regragui, whose side extended their record-breaking run of consecutive international victories to 19, surpassing Spain’s previous mark of 15 set between 2008 and 2009.

Morocco will face Mali in their second Group A match in Rabat.
