Zambia Under-17 striker Abel Nyirongo says winning the man of the match award has motivated him as he prepares for the second match against Morocco at the ongoing 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nyirongo was named man of the match after scoring Zambia’s second goal in their dominant 4-1 victory over Tanzania in their opening Group A match on Monday. He was heavily involved throughout the match.
Speaking after the game, Nyirongo said that the performance against Tanzania will drive him heading into the upcoming match against Morocco.
“This performance really means a lot to me; it motivates me to push in the next game. For this game is done, but winning this award really means a lot…. It will give me the drive to push and work hard,” Nyirongo said.

He also highlighted the importance of the first match in the tournament for both himself and the team.
“I think it’s a matter of wanting the three points….. This game was a crucial match for us; it is more of a derby. The first game in the group means a lot to a player and to the team, contributing to the team’s victory. That’s all I wanted, and thank God that it came to pass,” he stated.
The Atletico Lusaka striker urged his teammates to stay focused as they prepare for their next match against Morocco.
“We are just going to stay focused and determined and push until the very game against Morocco,” he concluded.
The next match is scheduled for Thursday at 22:00 CAT.
