Mozambique held host Egypt to a goalless draw in the first match of the TotalEnergies under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) yesterday in Cairo.
Senegal defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the second match of the day to take the lead in Group A.
Sulaymane Faye’s close-range finish was enough to secure victory for the Teranga Lions.
Senegal now leads Group A with three points, followed by Mozambique and Egypt with one point each, and Nigeria at the bottom with none.
Nigeria will face Egypt on Wednesday, while Senegal will face Mozambique in another match.
Meanwhile, 2021 runners-up, Unganda will open their campaign today against Central Africa Republic while South Sudan will lock horns with Congo Brazzaville in Group B.
2017 Champions, Zambia will also open their campaign against Benin on Tuesday and The Gambia will face Tunisia in Group C.
The 12 teams tournament whose defending Champions Ghana, failed to qualify, will continue up to 11 march 2023.

The last four teams at this year’s tournament will book automatic qualification to the 2023 Indonesia FIFA U-20 World Cup.
