Spain’s first win over Sweden in eleven attempts has earned them a place in their first Women’s World Cup final, thanks to a late winner by Real Madrid’s Carmona Garcia’s long-range strike that defeated the Scandinavians.
La Roja joins the ranks of teams such as the Netherlands and Japan in having won a semi-final game on their first attempt.
With their best achievement being a Round of 16 berth at the start of the 2023 edition, Spain was looking for more history, having beaten Denmark and the Netherlands in the knockout stages on their way to the last four.
Spain dominated the game from the start, but Sweden’s defense proved just why they have had some of the best defensive prowess in the tournament so far.
The game would come to life, however, in the 81st minute, when substitute Salma Paralluelo scored the opener and her second of the tournament to give Spain the lead.
Sweden equalized quickly after Rebecca Blomqvist’s curler found the back of the net, thanks to Lina Hurtig’s assist and Spain’s clumsy defense.
Carmona Garcia then stole the show, scoring the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to secure La Roja’s victory over Sweden and extend their relatively good run in the competition.
