Malawi’s Bingu National Stadium, is losing K40,000 million equivalent to $23,000 per month due to vandalism, Bolanews has learnt.
A Bolanews investigation has established that the Malawian government, the stadium owners, are struggling to deal with vandalism at the sporting facility.
Macmillan Mwale, the ministry of sports spokesperson, confirmed.
On average, over K40 million ($23,000) go towards maintenance of stadium due to vandalism per month.
“The perimeter fence, plumbing, and electrical facilities are mainly affected by vandalism and theft,” said Mwale.
Mwale said the ministry is moving to increase security personnel in prone areas such as toilets as one way to handle the situation.
“We are trying to sensitize people on the importance of safeguarding public infrastructure,” added Mwale.
Two years ago, Lingadzi Police in Lilongwe arrested two people for stealing materials worth K2.7 million from the stadium.

The police said after interrogation, the suspects admitted to having been conniving with the stadium security guards to steal the items, which they sold.
