Former Zambian winger Clifford Mulenga has described the current Copper Queens squad as the greatest generation in the history of Zambian women’s football, saying they deserve the best possible preparation ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The Copper Queens are currently in camp preparing for the tournament, where they have been drawn in Group B alongside Nigeria, Egypt and Malawi.
“This is arguably the greatest generation in the history of Zambian women’s football. For many of these players, this could be their final WAFCON. They deserve the very best preparation,” Mulenga said.
The former Chipolopolo winger said the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ), despite its financial challenges, should consider launching a nationwide fundraising campaign to support the team’s preparations.
“With the financial challenges currently facing FAZ, perhaps it’s time to think differently,” Mulenga said. “FAZ should launch a national fundraising campaign for the Copper Queens ahead of WAFCON 2026.”
Mulenga drew parallels with Zambia’s successful 2012 Africa Cup of Nations triumph, saying it was achieved through proper planning, investment and national support.
“The 2012 AFCON triumph did not happen by accident. It was built on planning, preparation, investment and a nation that believed in its team. The same mindset is needed today,” Mulenga said.
He also recalled the committee that was formed after the Copper Queens qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, saying it demonstrated the value of community involvement in sport.
“When the team qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, there was a committee of eminent women led by Ms Charity Lumpa that was formed. Perhaps we could take a leaf from that committee and see the importance of community involvement in sports development.”
Mulenga urged FAZ to rally support from corporate Zambia, the Zambian diaspora, football fans and the general public to ensure the Copper Queens receive the backing they need before the continental showpiece.
“Let FAZ bring together corporate Zambia, the diaspora, football fans and every patriotic Zambian behind one common goal. Thousands would gladly contribute if given the opportunity.”
The Copper Queens will begin their WAFCON campaign against Egypt on July 28, 2026.
