Three times ABSA Cup-winning midfielder Shadreck Malambo says the new format of the competition presents a huge opportunity for provincial and Division One sides to prove themselves and go all the way.
Malambo, is currently the only player to have won the competition with Red Arrows, Nkana, and Forest Rangers.
The midfielder is clubless, since leaving Indeni Football Club last season.
In an interview, Malambo urged the lower teams to adequately prepare and psyche the players for the bigger stage.
He adds, in football, possibilities can turn into reality with determination.
“Every team that qualifies for the Absa Cup is a potential champion, but it is down to what they do and what they want to achieve at the end of the day. Hard work and determination can make it possible for even provincial league teams and Division One to win it,” he said.
Malambo said the Super League teams remain the favourites but cautioned against underrating the National League clubs.
“The Super League clubs have bigger squads, which is an advantage over the other clubs in the competition, but there are teams from the lower leagues. But we have seen how competitive teams like Makeni All Stars and Roan United have been; they can upset these big guns,” he stated.
He concluded with a call to young players to dream big and go for the big prize.
“I cherish the record of winning the trophy with three clubs, but I also believe there is another young player that will one day do the same. They just have to continue working hard; it is possible.”
