When it appeared that the Portuguese men would have a disappointing night at home, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 901st career goal in the dying moments of the game to help his team win the UEFA Nations League match against Scotland on Sunday.

Scotland drew first blood with an early goal from Scott McTominay, who evaded the Portuguese defence with a brilliantly executed run into the box.

Ronaldo came on in the second half and ignited a comeback in the 88th minute in front of a sold-out Estadio da Luz stadium in Lisbon.

Despite dominating possession, Portugal was unable to break down Scotland’s defense. In the first 45 minutes of the game, they stopped 16 shots on goal.

The difference, however, came in the second half, when Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes equalized with a first-time finish off a Rafael Leao assist on his birthday.

When the game appeared to be heading for a 1-1 draw, veteran striker Ronaldo scored the winner off a Nuno Mendes cross from close range.

The Al Nassr star became the first player in history to score against 48 different countries.
