Grant explains progress made under his reign as Chipolopolo boys coach

With an illustrious career that spans over 50 years in football, Chipolopolo Boys Avram Grant really is a grandad in the game. 

Currently 68, Grant reflects on his career which started at the age of 18. After forward 50 years later, Grant now holds the position of Chipolopolo coach.

His had a decent run since taking charge after securing AFCON qualification following an 8 year long absence after stunning 3-0 win over eventual champions Côte d’Ivoire.

In as much as the 2012 African Champions capitulated in the group stages, the former Chelsea gaffer could still propel Zambia to greater heights.

“We have improved a lot in all areas of the pitch,” said Grant. “Our game is organized, we defend well, we attack with all the team. Apart from the game against Morocco, since I came in, we have scored in every game. I am very happy with what we have done – but we need to do even more.”

“They will be big challenges, of course,” Grant said. “There is no doubt Morocco are stronger than us, but we must never give up. We know our place, but we will give everything. I think people would say it will be hard to qualify for the World Cup. But when we played Ivory Coast, people also said we had no chance. I said, ‘So what?’ We beat them not just by one goal, but 3-0.

Grant will now shift his attention to the team’s upcoming FIFA World Cup 26™ qualifiers. Zambia grabbed 3 points from a possible 6 in their opening Group E games, their quest to secure their maiden appearance at the highest echelon of football will resume in June when they take on Morocco and Tanzania.
