On Sunday, Malawi and Kansas City striker Temwa Chawinga scored twice in her side’s 5-2 victory over Racheal Kundananji, the world’s most expensive female footballer and record CAF Player of the Year Award winner, Asisat Oshaola’s Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).

Temwa was named the world’s best striker in 2023 by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) after scoring 63 goals for Wuhan Jiangda and Malawi’s Scorchers before joining Kansas in January.

Following her brace, the Malawian striker is now tied for the NWSL lead in goals with Beatriz Zaneratto Joao and Nigeria’s Uchenna Kanu of Racing Louisville.

Her side now leads the NWSL standings with 13 points from five games. They are just a point ahead of the second-placed Washington Spirit.

In an exclusive interview with BolaNews on Monday morning, Temwa said that she is pleased with her current form and believes that teamwork will lead to even better results.

“Firstly, let me thank God and my teammates, plus the technical panel…… Because they welcomed me to their club, they are supportive, and they trust my ability by giving me game time,” said the 2023 COSAFA women’s championship top scorer.

‘Kundananji is my good friend’- Temwa

On scoring a brace against a star-studded Bay FC side, Temwa said, “It was a difficult game… But God was on our side and we collected the maximum points, which was what we planned for. “

She added that she was happy to meet Kundananji, who is a long-time friend of hers.

“Kundananji is my good friend; it was good playing against her. We are here representing Africa and after the match, we talked. She had a great game. It was just unfortunate that she failed to score but she is a great player,” Temwa told BolaNews.

The Malawian does not want to get ahead of herself in terms of winning the Golden Boot.

“I don’t want to give myself pressure; let’s play games as they come,” she said.
