Green Buffaloes women’s football team defeated Ntopwa football team of Malawi 1–0 to earn their first victory at the COSAFA Club women’s competition.

With the victory, Green Buffaloes move to the top of the Group, tied with Double Action Ladies, who defeated Lesotho Defence Force by a same score.

Given that Double Action Ladies had defeated Lesotho Defence Force by a score of 1 to zero in the earlier kickoff game, pressure was on their side going into this match.

Analysts questioned Coach Carol Kanyemba’s decision to make four changes to the team that played Double Action, benching Xiomara Mapepa, who scored on her debuting in the Green Buffaloes’ inaugural Group A game.

The current Cosafa champions had the first serious opportunity at goal when Joana Benaya’s shot struck the crossbar as both teams sought their first victory.

Following a lovely pass from Agness Phiri, Maweta Chilenga scored in the 16th minute to give the army women the lead, easing Buffaloes’ pressure.

By the end of regulation, the win was sufficient for the defending Zambia Women’s Super League winners to increase their prospects of advancing to the regional championship semi-finals.
