The Zambia U17 Girl’s Team have won the 2024 COSAFA U17 Girls’ trophy after a record-breaking performance.
Zambia won the title of Cosafa U-17 Women’s National Team Champion after crushing Lesotho 15-0 in South Africa on Friday.
The Copper Princesses are now the most successful side at the U17 Girls Championship with two trophies.
Copper Princesses netted 38 goals and only 2 conceded, winning all five matches in the process.
Zambian FA President Andrew Kamanga was ecstatic about the Grils’ success under coach Carol Kanyemba after seeing them destroy Lesotho.
Zambia Dominate Accolades, Kanyemba Makes History.
Kanyemba becomes, the second female Zambian coach to win a COSAFA title, after Florence Mwila. Kangwa Kaluba, led the Copper Princesses to their maiden Cosafa trophy when they beat Botswana 4-0 in 2021.
Florence, guided the senior Copper Queens to their second COSAFA trophy earlier this year.
Kamanga says the victory of the Under-17 girls re-affirms the growth of the women’s game in Zambia.
“A big congratulations to the girls and the technical bench for winning the Cosafa crown. The seeds we have been sowing over the years are beginning to bear fruit and the second phase of the plan is to sustain this growth and take it to the next level,” says Kamanga.
“The Under-17 girls were at the FIFA World Cup and have now added the Cosafa crown to their success, with the U-20 and Copper Queens emerging champions at Cosafa level.”
Kamanga says the success recorded in 2024 provides a platform to elevate the Zambian game to the next level.
“Our Chipolopolo, Copper Queens, Under-20 boys and Under-17 boys have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations which provides a springboard for greater undertakings in 2025,” he says.
Zambia won the Player of the Tournament, Goalkeeper and Top Scorer accolades through Mercy Chipasula and Loveness Chingwere (shot stopper).
