ZESCO United have began life after George Lwandamina on a positive note, beat Nkana 1-0 at a packed Nkana Stadium in Kitwe.
Emmanuel Siwale’s audition for a permanent job at Levy Mwanawasa has gone on well on day one, George Ngoma’s lone goal enough to start their domestic campaign with a win.
For the uninformed, Siwale is the interim coach at Zesco, momentarily filling the void left by veteran coach George Lwandamina who was fired earlier this week.
Coming into the match at the back of a Confederation Cup preliminary round elimination at the hands of Dynamos FC of Zimbabwe, a winning start in the top flight was paramount.
For most of the game though, it was Nkana who looked like they will bag a win but wasted chances by Harrison Chisala, Idris Mbombo and Jacob Ngulube came to hurt the Wusakile Boys who are without a win in the league so far.
After playing to a scoreless first half, Zesco took initiative in the 74th minute when Abraham Siankombo combined with George Ngoma to eke the nine-time champions into the lead.
Siankombo, formerly of Zanaco beat a defender on the left before sending a teasing low ball in the Nkana box. Ngoma reacted with an instinct of a cat to direct the ball in the net.
Nkana, who have drawn their first two games were hoping to bag full points in today’s match but they will have to wait until the next match.
