The race for the Zambian Super League Golden Boot is heating up, but the previous winner, Ricky Banda, who finished with 17 goals last season, has failed to replicate his goal-scoring prowess.
Banda misses out on the top ten scorers’ chart so far in the current campaign as of week 23.
LUBINDA MUNDIA- 6 GOALS
The veteran striker was crucial for the Prison Leopards in the first round of the season, and he was one of the best players in the Zambian league. However, injuries have not been kind to him, as he is currently nursing an injury that is expected to keep him out for several months.
DAVID OBASHI- 6 GOALS
The Prison Leopard’s talisman failed to live up to expectations at both Lusaka Dynamos and Nkana. But the Correct Boys decided to sign him permanently at the start of the season. The decision has been vindicated, with Obashi proving to be a key member of the Leopards team, which even led the league for a number two months.
ABRAHAM SIANKOMBO- 6 GOALS
For some time now, Abraham Siankombo’s progression rate has been on the rise. The Zanaco pacey winger continues to impress and remains one of the best attackers in the game. His form this season has helped Zanaco push for success.
COLLINS SIKOMBA- 6 GOALS
The former Lusaka Dynamos playmaker has blown hot and cold at Zesco United. While capable of producing stunning moments on his day, Sikombe has struggled to deliver on a consistent basis, coupled with a number of injury issues. His highlight of the season came when he scored a hat-trick against Red Arrows, and he remains the only player to have done that in the League this season.
ANDY BOYELI- 7 GOALS
The Congolese was a key member of Chambishi FC in the first round of the season, where he established himself as one of the league’s best strikers after scoring six goals. The former Limpopo FC forward is expected to inject new life into Power Dynamos’ attacking unit which has struggled for goals since Kennedy Musonda’s departure.
He appears to be prepared to fill Musonda’s shoes having already scored one goal and provided an assist in his first two appearances. Boyeli was named Man of the Match in both games against Napsa and Zesco.
CHRISTIAN SAILE – 7 GOALS
Now registered on the books of South African Premiership side Kaizer Chiefs. Saile was instrumental in securing Nchanga Rangers’ promotion to the Super League. He score 19 goals in the National League, which earned him the Golden Boot award. In the first half of the season, Saile scored 7 goals before leaving the club.
ANDREW PHIRI- 7 GOALS
Andrew Phiri was FC MUZA’s top scorer in the National League last season after scoring 16 goals. He helped the club gain to the Super League. Phiri’s fine form in the topflight has earned him a place in Zambia’s under-23 National team which is AFCON bound.
MUSONDA KAPEMBWE- 7 GOALS
He was a standout for Napsa Stars as they regained their place back in the MTN Super League. His form has continued since then. Musonda’s performance this season has been critical in keeping the pensioners’ chances of winning the Super League alive.
KENNEDY MUSONDA- 11 GOALS
The former Power Dynamos striker had a sensational season in the Super League’s first round. Musonda scored 11 goals and attracted interest from a number of African teams before settling for YANGA F.C.
MOYELA LIBAMBA- 11 GOALS
Libamba is currently headed for the golden boot as he tops the chart. The Zambian striker has been a key component of the Forest Rangers’ impressive form this season. Despite his own injuries and fitness issues, he has proven to be a game-changer whenever he is on the field. The talisman has been one of the most consistent goal-scorers in the Zambian League.
