Zambian Inmates Make FAZ Referees List for 2026 Season

Two inmates from Kabwe Maximum Correctional Facility earn FAZ approval after excelling in national referees examinations.

Two inmates from Kabwe Maximum Correctional Facility have been selected among the 372 referees approved by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to officiate during the 2026 football season. 

The two inmates passed the Zambian Referees National Examinations conducted by FAZ and obtained distinctions, according to the Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS).

FAZ recently unveiled the list of successful referees who will officiate matches across various leagues in the 2026 season.

372 candidates passed the assessment process out of 522 applicants, while 150 failed to meet the minimum requirements.

Referees are assessed through physical, mental and written tests to ensure they meet the standards required to officiate competitive matches.

ZCS Director of Sports and Culture Affairs, Assistant Commissioner Divino Kifita, said the success of the inmates demonstrated the effectiveness of rehabilitation programmes within the Service.

“The Commissioner General is proud of the inmates for passing their examinations with qualifying colours. This achievement reflects the essence of rehabilitation, as it prepares them for life after discharge,” Mr Kifita said.

He said the two inmates will officiate social football matches within the correctional facility and will be able to continue with their refereeing careers upon release.

Mr Kifita also commended FAZ for partnering with the Zambia Correctional Service in empowering inmates through sport and encouraged the successful candidates to remain disciplined and focused.
