Zanaco appointed Wedson Nyirenda on interim basis, in March this year, with the task of ensuring that the team survives relegation, following the sacking of subpar performers Kelvin Kaindu and Nigerian consultant Emmanuel Emenike.
On the final day of the league, Zanaco suffered a 2-1 defeat to Green Buffaloes played at Woodlands stadium. The result meant; the Lusaka based side closed the season on 13th position with 41 points.
Due to the postponement of the ABSA Cup final, which prolonged the end of the league, most of their players’ contracts had expired.
“The extension of the league had other implications on the team because most of our players, their contracts ended on 31st of May, so it was not easy to convince them to come and play hence making some makeshift team,” he explained.
“Wedson’s future at Zanaco unknown”
According to Nyirenda, this has been the worst season for Zanaco in their history and they need to do a lot they want to change the fortunes of the team.
“We can’t shy away from it and I must say the truth the team needs an injection of new players who can take the brand to the other level,”

“Zanaco is a big brand then if you have players who cannot shoulder that brand this is what happens,” he further added.
It is unknown if Wedson Nyirenda will be named as head coach on a permanent basis after joining the team on an interim basis.
