Power Dynamos have moved three points behind joint leaders Red Arrows and Zanaco after beating Kansanshi Dynamos 2-0 at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.
The match was a Week 8 rescheduled encounter where Kansanshi were hoping to record back-to-back wins following their 1 – 0 win over Nchanga Rangers.
Needing to recover from a 1-all draw in the Kitwe Derby against Nkana, Power had a chance to take the lead in the 12th minute when they were awarded a penalty. Their striker Moses Shumah stepped up, but his poor effort was saved by Kansanshi keeper Gwezani Banda.
The home side took the lead in the 23rd minute through Ronel Manyanga.
Leading at the break, Power doubled the advantage in the second stanza, this time, Shumah paying for his missed penalty in the 43rd minute. The Kenyan jumped high to head in a ball from a Prince Mumba cross.
The win takes Power to 21 points, three behind Arrows and Zanaco, who are tied on 24 points. They also remain unbeaten in their last five matches, having conceded only one goal.
The win is a boost to Power, who are planning to take on RS Berkane of Morocco in their first group stage match next week.
“Everyone expected us to win…It is always important that we have different formations going forward,” Power coach Oswald Mutapa said. “On a good run, but when you have chances like we had, you should try to score four for your confidence. When you score four, it means your confidence will be high.”
In Kabwe, Kabwe Warriors played to a scoreless draw against Green Eagles.
