“Our target was to survive relegation”- Nkana’s Mwenya Chipepo

Chipepo wants his players to treat every game as if it were a cup final after achieving their primary goal of avoiding relegation.

Since taking over Nkana FC as head coach in November, Mwenya Chipepo has won seven games and just lost once, moving the Kitwe side from the relegation danger zone to fourth in the MTN Super League standings with 28 points and just two points behind leaders Zesco United.

On Saturday, Nkana defeated FC Muza 2-0 to solidify their place at the top of the standings. However, Chipeopo is not focused on the league title, saying his target was to help the team survive relegation but emphasized that each game will be treated like a cup final.

“We’ll be taking each game like a cup final because all the teams, know that we are playing good football so it won’t be easy for us,” he told reporters at Nkana Stadium after Saturday’s victory.

Chipepo continued: “Like I said, we’ll be playing each game like a cup final, so we don’t have a target. Our target was to make sure that we survive, and we seem that we are going to survive the relegation; also, we had targeted to play in the ABSA Cup, so the rest will come on.”

Nkana will face Kabwe Warriors on Wednesday in a game that could confirm their qualification for the 2025 ABSA Cup. The match will be played at the Godfrey Ucar Chitalu in Kabwe.

“Kabwe Warriors are on top of us and we’ll be playing away from home. So we just have to go there and fight for a point or all three points,” Chipepo said.
