Power Dynamos coach Oswald Mutapa is out of contract at the end of next season. He has revealed to Bolanews that his immediate focus is defending the title and not extending his stay at Arthur Davies Stadium.
Mutapa joined Power in January last year, signing a two-and-a-half-year deal that is set to expire at the end of next season. Contract extension talks have not started, but all indications are that the club wants Mutapa to continue.
Interestingly, from Tenant Chilumba to Mwenya Chipepo and everyone in between, none of the last head coaches at Power since 2016 have lived the full duration of their contract. After winning the league, Mutapa is poised to be the first.
In an interview after he collected the coach of the year award, the soft-spoken trainer said his focus is to make Power a dominant force on the local scene; contract talks are not the focus.
“Another season [left] for me. We defend the title; that’s dominance for me. If there will be a need for me to continue, management will decide,” Mutapa said when quizzed about his future.
Meanwhile, Mutapa said that to dominate, his side needs to beef up.
He warned that rival clubs like Nkana, Zesco United, and Red Arrows will try by all means to wrestle the title away from the Arthur Davies side.
“There is a need to beef up the team, which we will do but again, [winning the league] is just the start of hard work. We need to work extra hard because the level in the Champions League is different.
“We need two strikers because we will be fighting on two fronts. ... And we also need midfielders. We were not a team when Prince [Mumba] was not in the team, so we need players that will help us because there will be so many games coming,” he said.
He added, “Many other clubs will want to go for it [the title], but for me it is about the dominance. If we get the right players, we are going to dominate.”
