The Zambian football community awoke to sombre news on Sunday morning, as the passing of former Power Dynamos coach Gaston Mutobo was confirmed. The late coach, who etched his name into the annals of Zambian football history with a memorable league triumph in 2000, breathed his last at Progress Hospital in Kitwe. He was mourned not only as a coach but as a passionate servant of the beautiful game.

Born with a deep love for football, Mutobo dedicated much of his life to the sport—both at home and abroad. His most famous moment came when he guided Power Dynamos to the Super League title at the turn of the millennium, a feat still fondly remembered by fans of the club. As fate would have it, his passing coincided with Power Dynamos clinching their latest league crown—an uncanny and emotional symmetry that added a layer of poignancy to his farewell.

FAZ Eulogises Mutobo

In a statement issued by the Football House in Lusaka on May 5th, 2025, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) paid tribute to the late coach. FAZ President Andrew Kamanga described his death as a “great loss” to the football community, stating, “His service to the game left an indelible footprint.” Kamanga noted that Mutobo’s legacy lived on through the lives he touched and the inspiration he provided, not only as a tactician but as a mentor to players and fellow coaches.

Gaston Mutobo’s influence extended beyond Zambia’s borders. His coaching career included stints with several Botswana clubs such as Botswana Defence Forces (BDF), NICO United, and Tafic. There, he earned respect for his discipline, tactical knowledge, and ability to build cohesive teams from modest squads. His professionalism and humility left a mark wherever he went.
