Former Nkwazi head coach Chris Kaunda has thrown his full support behind Keagan Phiri following his appointment as head coach of the Zambia Police-sponsored Nkwazi Football Club.

Phiri’s promotion to the top job was confirmed on Tuesday by Inspector General of Police Graphel Musamba. The former Nkwazi captain steps into the role after years of service as assistant coach under several respected figures, including Chris Kaunda himself and, most recently, Aggrey Chiyangi, who left to take over at Green Buffaloes.

Reacting to the news, Kaunda said Phiri’s appointment was long overdue and described it as a natural progression, given the coach’s deep ties to the club.

“It had to come, and it has finally come,” Kaunda said. “He knows the club from Young Nkwazi as a schoolboy from David Kaunda Secondary School to a senior player and captain of the club. He knows ‘FC Porto’ very well and has played alongside and against almost all the coaches in our league, including at national team level.”

Kaunda heaps praise on Phiri

Kaunda, who has also managed top-flight clubs such as Kabwe Warriors and Zanaco FC, commended Phiri’s humility and strong moral values, referencing his nickname “Anelka” — in honour of the French striker — and his devout Christian faith.

“Very humble young coach with a very strong Christian background and not easily moved,” Kaunda added. “All the best, my young man. Stay very focused. Nothing new about it. Congrats. May our Lord God Yeshua continue watching over you and bless your hands. May He give you wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.”

Phiri now takes the reins ahead of the 2025/26 season, with expectations high as he looks to maintain Nkwazi’s competitiveness in the Zambian Super League.

Inspector General Musamba has tasked him with guiding the team into the CAF qualification slots.
