The 34-year-old midfielder returns to the Zambian Super League after four years since he left the country to join South African outfit, Orlando Pirates.

According to a club statement by Napsa Stars, Mulenga who has been club-less after being released by Ama Zulu FC in July this year has signed “a short-term deal that will see him at the Club until mid-season.”

He has since revealed why he chose to join Napsa when his former club Zanaco, were also interested in his services.

I had an opportunity to join my former club Zanaco, and some other teams wanted me but of all the teams, Napsa is one team that showed too much interest in me.

I also had a few conversations [with coach Perry Mutapa] and he explained to me what he wants and the version that he has for the team, it’s also one thing that gave the interest [in choosing Napsa].

said Mulenga

The Zambian international has targeted reviving his form after five months of suffering from an a long injury that kept him away from the pitch and hopes he will extend his contract with Napsa.

I just want to see myself where I was before I got injured, that’s my target. I am not even worried about this short contract, I just want to work hard because I know my capabilities and I know my strength, I know what I can do.

I know by now I have signed a short contract but if I will work hard and show everyone that I can still do what I used to do, I am sure Napsa will give me a long-term contract.

He added

Mulenga who already started training with the club and scored in a friendly match against Makeni stars on Thursday was a shock exit from South African side Amazulu after his contract with the Usuthu was not renewed as he suffered an Achilles tendon injury.

He was released despite being considered one of the key players in the squad that qualified for the Caf Champions League for the first time with their then coach, Bennie McCarthy last season.

The midfielder bitterly complained to the club after learning that they were not going to renew his contract. He lamented that it was unfair not to renew his contract after getting injured while playing for the team.

The Chipolopolo winger scored eight goals and registered 13 assists in 48 games for the South African club after joining them from Orlando pirates in October 2020.

Mulenga emerged as one of the leading figures in attack and played a pivotal role in the McCarthy-led Amazulu that finished as runners-up of the 2021-22 South African Premiership and secured their first-ever qualification for the CAF champions league.

He returns to Zambia having already had stints at Zanaco FC and Nkwazi FC and the Super League will not be new to him with Napsa stars coach Perry Mutapa already confident he will add value to his attack.

Mulenga is an international player, he has played professional football for big teams in South Africa, Orlando Pirates and Ama Zulu so I think he is going to add a lot of fire power which is needed in our frontline. The acquisition of Mulenga, I think will add a lot of experience and be a mentor to the young players, so we are very happy to have him on board.

Said Perry Mutapa.
