Fresh from winning the 2024 CECAFA Cup, Zambian champions Red Arrows are scheduled to make another trip to Tanzania to face Young Africans (Yanga) Sports Club on Yanga Day.
The 2024 Yanga Day will be held on Sunday, August 4 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The Tanzania Premier League champions will clash with the treble-winning Airmen.
Yanga Day is traditionally used to introduce new players to the club’s ardent fans ahead of the new season.
Coach Chisi Mbewe has led the Airmen to three titles in 2024, including the Zambian Super League, Absa Cup, and, most recently, the CECAFA Kagame Cup.
According to a source, the club has agreed to play in the upcoming match. Arrows will use the match as preparation for next month’s CAF Champions League tie against Malawi’s FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
“Yes, Red Arrows will be heading to Tanzania for Yanga Day. They have accepted to play Young Africans as part of preparations for the CAF Champions League. More details will be revealed in due course,” the source said.
Yanga, Arrows clash to be the first in history
Although both sides have made no official announcement, Yanga Media and Communication Officer Ally Kamwe encouraged the club’s supporters to turn out in numbers on August 4th to celebrate the climax of ‘Wiki ya Wananchi’ (Citizens Week).
“I won’t reveal too much,” Kamwe said. “But I assure Yanga fans that August 4th will be a historic day with plenty of thrilling events.”
He did not disclose the opponent but hinted at a prestigious tie for Yanga Sports Club.
In 2024, the Airmen have only lost two matches across all competitions. They lost 1-0 to Kabwe Warriors and 5-0 to Al Hilal on July 13.
These strong performances make them a formidable competitor against Yanga, which has equally lost just three matches in open play since the turn of the year across all competitions.
This will be the first meeting between Red Arrows and Yanga.
