Former Chipolopolo midfielder Charles Musonda has added his voice to the possibility of a Zambian player featuring in one of the most fierce derbies in global football, the El Clasico between Real Madrid and Barcelona.
In response to a comment on his social media post, Musonda, who played most of his career in Belgium, noted that it is not easy for a Zambian player, especially defenders and midfielders to break into top-tier European competitions.
When a commenter expressed his desire to see a Zambian player taking part in the El Clásico.
In response, Musonda wrote: “Defence and midfield are very difficult, but maybe an attacking player, winger or striker.”
When asked why he felt it is not easy for defensive players to break into major leagues. He said, “It’s difficult to master defending in Africa…we’re strong, but as youth, most prefer to play in front. You need to be more competitive and have awareness of the game as a defender or midfielder.
“Forward positions are individualistic; you play on your instincts,” he explained. “Defence and midfield, you grow according to your youthful competition, hence Europeans are more capable to occupy those positions.”
