Two of Zambia’s rising football stars, goalkeeper Mwila Mufunte and midfielder Mercy Chipasula, have expressed confidence and eagerness to contribute to the Copper Queens’ campaign at the upcoming 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which kicks off in Morocco this Saturday.

Zambia has been drawn into Group A alongside hosts Morocco, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the team already in Morocco for early acclimatisation and final preparations.

Speaking in an interview, Mufunte said, “I’ve always dreamed of playing at a big tournament like this. Being here at WAFCON is something I’ve worked hard for, and I’m ready to give my best.”

She added, “The competition among us is healthy. It pushes everyone to improve and helps the team grow. We’re also adapting well to the temperatures here in Morocco, and coming early has really helped us settle.”

‘It’s a dream come true” – Chipasula

Fan favourite Mercy Chipasula, who plies her trade with Kamfinsa Blue Eagles Queens, echoed similar sentiments as she expressed gratitude for her inclusion in the senior national team.

“It’s honestly a dream come true to be part of the Copper Queens at such a major tournament,” she said. “The preparations have been going very well, and the team is focused on progressing from the group stages.”

“The atmosphere in camp is amazing. There’s real unity and encouragement among the players…And I think that will make a huge difference in how we perform.”

Zambia will kick off their WAFCON campaign against host nation Morocco on July 5 at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

The Copper Queens and Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses have faced each other five times since 2022, with Zambia winning three, drawing one, and losing once.
