The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has suspended Executive Committee Member Daud Mtanthiko following a sexual scandal that has shaken the Malawi Women’s National Team, the Scorchers.
This decision comes in the wake of BolaNews’ exposé last week, which uncovered a sexual scandal within the Scorchers’ camp, in which Mtanthiko is a suspected perpetrator. He is accused of soliciting for sexual favors including kisses and hugs from members of the team each time they are in camp.
Since the story broke, there has been mounting pressure from organizations and associations across Malawi demanding that FAM take decisive action. Critics have accused the association of delaying its response.
On Sunday afternoon, FAM officially announced that Mtanthiko has been suspended pending investigation.
The announcement came after reports emerged that Mtanthiko had travelled with the Malawi School Girls’ National Team, currently in Accra, Ghana.
Although FAM denied these allegations, BolaNews confirmed that Mtanthiko was seen at Chileka Airport in Blantyre with the team.
A source said : “Yes, we were together with him at Chileka, we were on the same flight from Chileka to Ethiopia. We connected to Ghana with him going to another country. Seems he has a personal business.”
FAM responded: “FAM wishes to clarify that Mr. Mtanthiko is currently under suspension pending investigations into allegations levelled against him. As such, he is not part of the delegation in Ghana.”
Meanwhile, the Sports Council of Malawi, the Malawi Human Rights Commission, and COSAFA are actively working to ensure justice is served in the matter.
The victim has reportedly submitted her statement to COSAFA and is scheduled to meet with the Malawi Human Rights Commission.
