With the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup around the corner, two of Africa’s female footballers have taken the Spanish Womens top-flight league by storm.

Zambia’s Racheal Kundananji and Nigeria’s Asisat Oshaola have continued to score for Madrid CF and Barcelona respectively.

The two who are World Cup bound have scored a combined total of 30 goals in the Primera Division.

Copper Queens’ Kundananji on Saturday, netted a brace for the Madrid side which thumped Alves 5-1.

It was her 12th goal in 19 league appearances and her fifth brace of the season in the Madrid shirt.

The striker has also provided two assists for her side who are now sitting 5th in the league standings.

Meanwhile, Super Falcons’ striker Ashaola has netted 18 goals in 18 appearances for Barcelona.

The five-time African player of the year award winner has remained consistent with last season’s outstanding performances.

She was the league’s top scorer with 20 goals in 19 appearances last season, beating the reigning Ballon d’Or winner and FIFA’s “The Best” award winner, Alexia Putellas, who scored 18 goals in 26 appearances for Barcelona.

Asisat needs two more goals to surpass her previous season’s total of goals. She will look to do so today when Barcelona takes on Villareal.

The former African Champion is currently second on the scorer’s chart behind league top scorer Alba Maria Ferrer of Spain who has 19 goals in 19 appearances.

Kunda and Asisat key for Zambia and Nigeria’s World Cup campaigns

Meanwhile, both Kundananji and Asisat will be key players for their respective countries at the World Cup, which is set to kick off on July 20, 2023.

The womens football showpiece will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, with Zambia making their debut while Nigeria have appeared at all the previous editions since 1991.

Zambia is in Group C alongside Spain, Costa Rica, and Japan. They will kick off their campaign against Japan on the 22nd of July.

Nigeria is in group B with hosts Australia, Canada, and the Republic of Ireland.
