The Copper Queens have ramped up their preparations for their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Angola.
However, the team will be without its 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship top scorer, Sarah Jere of Zanaco FC Ladies, and Eneless Phiri, who have both been ruled out due to injuries.
Jere told BolaNews that she is very sad about her situation, as her dream of playing for the first team alongside her idol Barbra Banda was on the verge of becoming a reality.
“It’s a big blow for me because I really wanted to be part of the team,’ she said.
“It’s been my dream to play for the Copper Queens; now that the opportunity has come, I’m not feeling well.
“I would have been happy to play with Babra Banda because she is my inspiration.”
Jere backs Copper Queens to beat Angola
Jere, who suffered an ankle injury, believes the team will beat Angola.
“I wish the team well and the very best of luck. I know we are winning Angola,” she said confidently.
Jere made her debut for the Copper Queens at the Cosafa Cup, finishing as Zambia’s top scorer with four goals.
Meanwhile, ZISD FC striker Namasiku Lungowe has replaced Jere in the team. Zesco Ndola Girls FC striker Charity Mubanga has taken Phiri’s place.
The first leg of the WAFCON qualifier will be played in Angola on Wednesday next week, while the second leg will be on December 5, 2023, at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The winner of the two fixtures will qualify for the WAFCON, which will be held in Morocco in 2024.
