The Super Falcons fought tooth and nail to claim a 0-0 draw against current Olympic gold medalists Canada. In their record-equaling 9th FIFA World Cup, the African side secured a crucial point against the 7th-best-ranked team on the planet.

Following a goalless first half, Canada were presented with an opportunity to go ahead, courtesy of a spot-kick after Francisca Ordega brought down Christine Sinclair in the box.

Sinclair was ready to extend her record as the all-time international goalscorer in women’s football 191 goals but she missed the penalty.

Nnadozie masterclass

The 22-year-old Nnadozie denied Sinclair what could have been a match-winning goal with a stunning left-handed save.

The Nigerian shot-stopper completed her heroics by parrying away the loose ball from her six-yard box. It was a reminder of why the youngster is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Despite the North American side piling up some pressure in the second half, the Super Falcons maintained their defensive solidity. The 2022 WAFCON semifinalists appeared to be denied a late winner with a save from point-blank range before an offside was spotted in the buildup.

The Super Falcons completed the match with 10 players when teenager Deborah Abiodun caught the opposition player above the ankle. Following a VAR review by referee Lina Lehtovaara, the initial yellow card offense was deemed worthy of a red.

Nigeria still managed to see out the goalless stalemate despite going one player down to earn a very important point in a tough group. They currently sit joint second in group B behind Australia.

Up next for the Super Falcons is a battle against hosts, Australia, on July 27 in Brisbane. Nigeria will then complete their group stage with a clash against debutants Ireland.
