After taking a year off for maternity leave and missing the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Copper Queens goalkeeper Ngambo Musole came back to the big stage last year to keep clean sheets, securing Zambia’s qualification for both the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Last month in Gqeberha, South Africa, Musole guided the Copper Queens to the 2024 COSAFA Women’s Championship title with her heroic penalty saves. She saved two penalties in the shootout and scored one herself.

After a goalless draw in regulation time and extra time, Zambia defeated South Africa 4-3 on post-match penalties to win the title for the second time.

“It felt so good [to score the penalty] because we normally [practice it] ; whenever we have a session, we train for it,” she said.

The Green Buffaloes goalkeeper has now won two COSAFA medals after missing from the triumphant 2022 squad. She believes the 2024 victory is more sweet than the first triumph.

“I think this was the sweetest victory we had.”

Musole has been an integral member of the squad, playing three matches at the regional tournament after having also been part of the squad at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

At her club, Musole has also been entrusted with the duties of keeping clean sheets for the Zambia Army-sponsored side.
