Zambian champions Red Arrows have advanced to the final of the 2024 CECAFA Dar Port Kagame Interclub Cup after beating Al Wadi 2-0 with goals by Paul Katema and Alassane Diarra in extra time.
The Airmen began their campaign in the competition where they are participating as an invitee with a 1-0 win against Kenya’s Gor Mahia FC but suffered a 5-0 bashing to Sudanese giants Al Hilal.
Following that defeat, Red Arrows needed to win in order to finish with six points and advance to the next round as the best second-place team, ahead of Uganda’s SC Villa, who finished with five points.
Chisi Mbewe’s side went on to beat ASAS Djibouti Telecom 1-0 in a Group B match at the KMC Stadium on Tuesday with Anthony Shipanuka scoring the lone goal that secured their spot in the semifinals.
Red Arrows’ progression to the final after Friday’s win over Al Wadi means they will face Rwanda’s APR FC for the US$30,000 grand prize.
APR defeated Al Hilal 5-4 on penalties after a tightly contested semifinal clash that ended goalless in regulation time earlier today.
The runner-up of this year’s CECAFA Cup will pocket US$20,000 while the third-placed will take US$10,000.
