Nigeria shatters Malawi’s U20 Women’s FIFA World Cup dream

Nigeria coach Moses Anduku said it was a wonderful game from both sides, indicating that they never came to Malawi to lose, but eventually they lost, though they will progress on aggregate scores.

The Malawi Women’s Under 20 Football team is out of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers after going down 3-2 on aggregate to Nigeria.

Malawi failed to turn the tables in the second leg played at Bingu National Stadium on Saturday.

Having lost 2-0 in the first leg in Nigeria, the Junior Scorchers needed to score three goals without conceding.

The home side was two goals up at 60 minutes through goals from Faith Chimzimu, giving hope to Malawians to see a winning goal.

One minute later, Nigeria equalized through substitute Precious Chimerre Oscar, who had replaced Alaba Olabiy at halftime, demanding much energy from the Junior Scorchers to score two more to qualify.

Malawi coach Maggie Chombo-Sadik thanked her charges for the fight despite the defeat.

“Next time we will do better. We had pressure since we were losing 2-0; the performance wasn’t bad, just that we played under huge pressure and made mistakes to gift them a goal,” she said.

Nigeria coach Moses Anduku said it was a wonderful game from both sides, indicating that they never came to Malawi to lose, but eventually they lost, though they will progress on aggregate scores.

“I respect Malawians; they played well and scored two, but later they went to bed and we scored.

“This is the first time for us to get a qualification; this is a huge motivation to the team,” said Anduku.

After 90 minutes it was a frustrating day for fans at a packed stadium in Lilongwe as Nigeria secured Africa’s four tickets to the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland on a 3-2 aggregate.
