Indeni FC forward Mwila ‘Mwinx’ Kalumba has explained how ‘financial motivation’ is fueling him as he continues to inspire the club in their pursuit of Zambian Super League promotion.
The playmaker came off the bench to score a sublime match-winning goal as Indeni claimed a 1-0 victory over 2nd-placed Lumwana Radiants at the Indeni Sports Complex on Sunday.
Following their narrow win over the Lumwana, the Ndola-based side has now amassed 35 points from 23 games. They occupy the 7th spot in the FAZ National Division One (2nd-tier) standings and are within three points of the promotion spot.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with BolaNews about his match-winning moment, Kalumba revealed, “That moment was very important for the team because we needed the three points more than Lumwana. For us to qualify for the Super League, we need to win matches.”
“At this stage of the season, we might need players to produce moments of individual brilliance like that. I felt very happy to help the team win that game.”
Kalumba has been a key player for Indeni FC this season, scoring two important goals from the bench alongside a handful of assists. He signed with the club from third-tier side Ndola United FC in September 2023.
Kalumba explains Ndola United’s struggles
He was a talismanic figure for Ndola United, who narrowly missed out on promotion to the second tier to Mutondo Stars and Roan United in 2021–22 and 2022–23, respectively. His impressive goalscoring feat in 2021–22 earned him a place on the podium for the FAZ Copperbelt Division One Player of the Year award.
The 25-year-old explained why his former club, Ndola United, struggled to gain promotion to the second tier in the last two years.
“It’s due to financial reasons. For example, here at my new club, Indeni FC, we are financially motivated. They give us everything we want. So it’s up to us, the players, to deliver results for the team.”
Indeni FC are aiming to make their return to the Zambian topflight after suffering relegation in the 2021–22 season. However, if Indeni fails to make it to the Super League, Kalumba is open to joining any top-flight club.
“In that case, I would join any MTN Super League team that wants me. But ZESCO and Zanaco FC are my favorites,” the Indeni FC star added.
