Charly Musonda, the former Chelsea FC wonderkid and son of ex-Zambian international Charles Musonda Sr, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 28.

In an emotional video posted on Rising Ballers, Musonda said: “I’ve got a big announcement today. It’s not easy but it’s something I’ve been thinking about for a long time. After reflecting on my experiences and who I am, I’ve realised I want to live with purpose to inspire and motivate others.”

Musonda joined Chelsea’s academy from Anderlecht in 2012 at the age of 15 and was once dubbed the next Eden Hazard. He made his senior debut for the Blues in August 2017 during the Community Shield clash against Arsenal but managed just seven first-team appearances in total. His time at Stamford Bridge was marked by multiple loan spells, including stints at Real Betis, Celtic, and Vitesse.

Despite his immense potential, Musonda’s career was derailed by a string of persistent injuries and unsuccessful loan moves. He admitted that leaving Chelsea “killed” him mentally.

Musonda’s drop after Chelsea exit

Following his departure from the club in 2022, he signed for Spanish side Levante and made 19 appearances across all competitions in a single season. He later moved to Cyprus, joining Anorthosis for the 2023/24 campaign, but made just 11 appearances before spending the most recent season without a club.

Musonda’s emergence on the big football stage generated excitement among many Zambians. However, despite being eligible to play for Zambia, he opted to represent Belgium, the country he had featured for at various youth levels. Unfortunately, he never earned a senior cap for Belgium.

His parents both of who are Zambians received widespread backlash from their patriots over their son’s decision.

Looking ahead, Musonda says he plans to remain in football. He revealed, he will still be involved in the sport in some way, particularly helping young players express their talents the best way they can.
