Brazilian playmaker Neymar Jr has been ruled out of the match against Switzerland after he sustained an injury in Brazil’s opener against Serbia, which the Samba boys won by 2-0 thanks to a Richarlison brace.
Footage showed the Brazilian superstar covering his face with his jersey and crying on the bench after he was substituted in the 79th minute.
Brazil’s team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar revealed the extent of the player’s injury on Friday and confirmed he will miss the remaining group-stage matches.
” Neymar and Danilo started treatment yesterday, immediately after the game, through today’s clinical evaluation, we thought it was important to do imaging tests, an MRI to have more data on the evolution of the two players,” Lasmar said.
“And a medial ligament injury to Danilo’s left ankle. Players remain in treatment. It is very important to be very calm, peaceful. This assessment will be carried out daily so that we have information and make the best decisions based on it.”
Neymar has always struggled with injuries at the World Cup, in 2014 he suffered a back injury during the quarter-final, and in 2018 he was on the sideline for three months before the tournament started.
Brazil will play their second game against Switzerland on Monday with a victory in that ensuring they book a slot in the round of 16.
They are currently leading group G with 3 points level with Switzerland who defeated Cameroon 1-0 to take the second position while the Africans and Serbia are tied at third and fourth with no points.
