Zambia advanced to the knockout stage of the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup after defeating Honduras 5-2 on Friday night.
The win marked their second consecutive victory at the tournament, following a 3-2 triumph over Indonesia in their opening match — a dream start in their debut appearance at the competition.
Zambia’s goals came from Kelvin Chipelu (5’), Felix Phiri (14’), James Sibeene (40’), Billy Daka (73’), and Abel Nyirongo (88’), while Honduras found the net through Arriola (44’) and Flores (52’).
Team captain Jonathan Kalimina delivered a standout performance, providing two assists and earning the Player of the Match award.

On Monday, the Young Chipolopolo will face Brazil — who thrashed Indonesia 4-0 — in their final Group H encounter as they aim to finish top of the group.
“It’s a great feeling. Honestly, we knew this game was going to be very difficult because they are coming from a loss,” Zambia’s head coach Dennis Makinka said after the match. “We prepared for this game. The boys came to the party. We got early goals, but disappointingly, we conceded those silly mistakes that we allowed them to get two goals.”
Makinka was, however, thrilled that his side progressed to the knockout stage with two wins and eight goals scored.
“It’s such a great feeling, you know, first time at the World Cup and winning our first two matches. It’s so massive. So massive for the country and for the boys.”
On facing Brazil in their final group match, Makinka said his team will push to secure top spot.
“We’ll try and win the game because, you know, you top the group, obviously you get a less powerful team, obviously the ones that will go through as best losers. So we’ll try and push to get the top spot. If it happens, we’ll be happy.”
