In an attempt to appeal a decision by the International Court for Sports Arbitration (CAS) ordering FAZ to compensate former Chipolopolo coach Aljosa Asanovic, the Zambian FA was unsuccessful.

FIFA imposed a $1.1 million payment order on FAZ for Asanovic’s unfair termination. Asanovic after he claimed wrongly sacked from Chipolopolo.

FAZ had maintained that they do not owe Asanovic a dime as he abandoned his duties before he unilaterally terminated his contract with Zambia in September 2022.

Initially hired by FAZ on January 18, 2022, the Croatian had a four-year deal. By August of the same year, though, tensions between the two had grown.

Following Zambia’s 1-0 home loss to Mozambique and subsequent elimination from the African Nations Championship, Asanovic resigned from his position.

Asanovic was in charge of the Chipolopolo boys for eight games out of which he managed to win three times and lost four games across all competitions.

His tally of wins included two against Senegal and Namibia at the 2022 COSAFA cup which he won to become the first expatriate coach to win the regional trophy with Zambia since the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations winning coach Herve Renard who achieved the feat in 2013.

Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) General Secretary Reuben Kamanga says the appeal by FAZ of the verdict by the single judge has failed.

What the verdict means to FAZ?

“We wish to confirm that we are in receipt of the verdict by the International Court for Sports Arbitration (CAS) which has upheld the decision by the single judge to award former coach Aljosa Asanovic for unlawful dismissal,” says Kamanga.

“The reason for the dismissal of our appeal have not yet been shared but will be availed in due course and will determine our next course of action.”

Kamanga adds: “In the meantime, FIFA will restrict the development funds FAZ is entitled to until the same is fully satisfied.”
