Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi left Old Trafford on crutches last night after sustaining an injury during Everton’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United in the third round of the FA Cup.

After being tackled by United’s Tyrell Malacia in the second half, Iwobi, who has been a crucial player for the Toffees this season with one goal and five assists, was taken off on a stretcher.

Everton manager Frank Lampard has since confirmed that the Nigerian suffered ankle ligament damage.

“It’s ankle ligament damage but hopefully on the lesser side of what we first thought because it looked quite bad at the time because of the awkward fall,” he said after the match. “We’re hoping it’s not too bad but I can’t give an exact time frame.”

After losing at Old Trafford last night, the Toffees were eliminated from the FA Cup.

They will now turn their attention to the league, where they are sitting in the relegation zone with 15 points after having won just three of their 18 games this season.
