Arsenal won the Community Shield to kick off their new season with their first silverware, defeating treble winners Manchester City on penalties.
City scored first through substitute Cole Palmer in the second half and appeared to have won, but Manuel Akanji’s own goal gave Arsenal a 1-1 tie and forced a shootout.
The Gunners scored all of their spot-kicks while Kevin De Bruyne fired against the bar and Aaron Ramsdale saved Champions League final match-winner Rodri’s poor effort.
Last season’s Premier League top scorer, Erling Haaland, had a quiet afternoon in this match. He was later substituted for Palmer.

Arsenal had their chances and perhaps got the goal they deserved when a late Leandro Trossard shot deflected off Akanji.
Fabio Vieira converted the winning penalty for the Gunners in the shootout to secure a 4-1 win.
City’s Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri missed their spot kicks.
