Is Gabadihno Mhango’s form back to help flames again?

The Malawian striker upset Sundowns in the DSTV Premiership on Monday with a slick finish for Swallows.

Gabadinho Mhango is Malawi’s current top scorer in the Patrick Mabedi-led squad with 15 goals in 58 games since making his debut in 2012.

However, he has been out of form for the past five months, a thing which has been a source of concern among the majority of Malawians.

If Mhango’s performance this month is any indication, Malawians may be smiling as the Flames prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers in June.

The Moroka Swallows striker disappointed Malawians during the Four Tournament, which took place in Lilongwe last month and saw Malawi lose every game.

Mhango appeared unhappy after being substituted in the game against Zambia at the tournament due to an underwhelming performance, with some Malawians claiming that he should never be called up to the national team.

However, this must be a historical account. Mhango scored the equalizer in the 84th minute to help Swallows earn a point at home in a 2-2 DSTV Premiership draw against African champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Monday.

The former Orlando Pirates striker was also on target away to Cape Town Spurs on Tuesday last week, when the lone goal helped his team secure all three points.

“It doesn’t get better than scoring against the Sundowns and considering our situation, a draw wasn’t bad at all,” he told reporters following the game.

The 31-year-old striker thinks his side, who are in position 14 in the 14-team Dstv Premiership will avoid relegation.

“We are trying to hang in there and avoid relegation,” he said.
