After Zambia’s Under-20 Women’s National Team defeated South Africa 3-0 in their opening match in the COSAFA U20 Women’s Championship | Region V Games, defender Lweendo Hanongo expressed her excitement.
Hanongo scored one goal in the thrilling victory, which gave the Florence Mwila-led team a strong start to the season. On Monday, Zambia will play Angola.
Speaking in a post-match interview, Hanongo admitted that the contest was challenging but emphasized the importance of starting strong.
“It was a tough game because South Africa is always a competitive side, but we fought hard and stayed focused. Starting with a win gives us the confidence and momentum we need going forward,” said Hanongo.
On scoring the second goal of the match, Hanongo credited her awareness and belief in her ability.
“I was in the right place at the right time. I always believe I can contribute to the team, even by scoring. I’m happy it paid off,” she added.
Charity Nthala, the team’s assistant coach, complimented the team’s focus and discipline.
“The girls followed instructions very well, and that made the difference today. We prepared for this match and they executed exactly what the technical bench wanted,” said Nthala.
In their upcoming match against Angola, Zambia will be looking to capitalize on their impressive start.
