Zambia head coach Moses Sichone has explained the decision to appoint Fashion Sakala as the new Chipolopolo captain ahead of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Chipolopolo technical bench announced changes to the team’s leadership structure, with Sakala taking over the armband.

The revised captaincy pecking order demotes Lubambo Musonda to first assistant captain, and Kings Kangwa was appointed second assistant. Frankie Musonda and Benson Sakala were named the third assistant and fourth assistant captains.

The adjustments were unveiled shortly before Monday’s training session at the Pinata Sports Arena in Murcia, Spain.

Addressing the players, Sichone paid tribute to Musonda for the leadership he provided while serving as captain.

“Lubambo is still one of the captains; we just thought it necessary to make a few changes at that level. I urge you all to support the new team leadership,” Sichone said.

The Chipolopolo coach further called on the players to rally behind Sakala and give him the full backing required as the team shifts focus to the continental showpiece.

For his part, Musonda welcomed the changes and urged the squad to embrace the new leadership structure for the good of the team.

“As the coach has said, I urge you to support the new guy (Fashion Sakala), and the rest of the players announced. Take the instructions seriously and obey them, as they are messengers for the technical bench,” Musonda said.

Meanwhile, Sakala said he has accepted the responsibility with humility and respect. He paid tribute to his predecessor for his leadership and camaraderie and promised to unite the team.

“I am deeply grateful and truly honored to be appointed as the National Team Captain. I would like to sincerely thank everyone for the trust and confidence you have placed in me. This responsibility means a lot to me,” Sakala wrote in a Facebook post on Monday night.

“As a captain, my goal is to encourage and motivate every member of the team, to lead with commitment and humility,” added the Al Fayha striker.

He continued: “And to help unite us as one strong and focused group. Together, I believe we can push each other to be better, support one another on and off the field, and represent our nation with pride.

“Thank you once again for believing in me. I am ready to give my all for the team and for our country.”

Sakala’s captaincy officially begins this evening as Zambia takes on DR Congo in an international friendly match.
