Tazara Police goalkeeper Elvis Lungu has described the recently held national team player selection trails as competitive.

The Mpika-born goalkeeper was part of the Copperbelt Zone final squad that faced the Copperbelt All Stars select team.

The 18-year-old had his share of minutes coming on as a second-half substitute, with the Copperbelt Select emerging as winners via a 2-0 scoreline.

Despite making some vital saves, Lungu was beaten via a penalty in the second half of the match.

He, however, remains optimistic about making it to the next round, which will bring together the best from the Midlands and Copperbelt select teams.

“The competition was good; I really enjoyed it because I had three competitors, and they were all good. Without them, I wouldn’t have the mood to put in more effort, so that made me put in more effort, but thank God I managed it. Indeed, it was a good competition.”

Lungu stated that he has picked up lessons during the games, which will propel him to be a good player for both the club and the national team in the near future.

“Yes, I will make it because I have learnt a lot of things that will help me become the best goalkeeper and a representative of the country.”

Lungu thrilled to work with role models

During this process, Lungu has had the opportunity to work with former national team goalkeepers Joshua Titima and Jacob Banda.

He is full of praise for the two legendary players.

“Coach Joshua Titima is so kind and friendly, and Coach Jacob Banda has good, powerful diving. These are my role models,” he revealed.

“My dream is to become the best goalkeeper in the world, an inspiration to others, and the helper of the nation.”

Lungu has previously attracted the attention of teams in Lusaka, including Shamuel Academy, due to his ability to use both feet coupled with good reflexes.

He has previously played for former Super League side Real Nakonde on a one-year loan deal from Tazara Police.
