Zambian defender Golden Mafwenta, who is on loan at FC Metalist from Czech Republic club Vyskov until June 2025, has confirmed that he intends to pursue other European opportunities.
Mafwenta was called up to the national team last month, his first appearance since January. He appeared in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone, playing 23 minutes each.
The 23-year-old stated in an interview that he went to Ukraine to regain his form, not to stay.
“I went to Ukraine to regain my form not stay,” he said. “I have a lot of plans. For me to be that side [Ukraine], I just wanted like to change the team and the environment. So I am not that side to stay, but if anything happened, I can stay, but that’s not my plan.”

The former Zanaco FC defender has played ten games in the Ukrainian First League this season and says he is enjoying his time in the country.
“So far, so good, and it’s really amazing. Like, I’m really enjoying that side. I think everything is now different. I found a lot of good people who helped me to gain confidence and adapt my lifestyle and my performance as well.”
Mafweta’s journey to Europe began in 2021, when he moved from Zambian Super League club Zanaco to Vyskov. The move represented a significant step forward in his career, and many expected him to succeed.

However, his time in Vyskov was brief. He was loaned to the Real Monarchs after only one season in 2022. The Chipolopolo defender explained that the loan move to Real Monarchs was part of his overall development.
Mafweta has played 73 games in all competitions since moving to Europe three years ago, scoring two goals and providing two assists. He wants to play football in Europe and will look into opportunities this year.
“For now, it’s Europe. I just have to focus on Europe,” he explained. “As for Saudi Arabia, if something comes up, maybe. But right now, my focus is entirely on Europe.”
While he has struggled for form in the past season, Mafweta is clear about his current priorities: to make a mark in Europe and prove himself at the highest level of the game.
