Former Chipolopolo captain Kalusha Bwalya has led several football administrators and players in paying tribute to the late former president Edgar Lungu for his contributions to the game.

On Thursday, Zambians were treated to shocking news on the demise of Lungu, who passed away while undergoing treatment at Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria.

News of Lungu’s demise was confirmed by his daughter, Tasila Mwansa; his party, the Patriotic Front; and later by the republican President Hakainde Hichilema.

Lungu ruled Zambia between 2015 and 2021 and also served the ceremonial role of Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) patron.

Kalusha Bwalya, a former FAZ president and Chipolopolo legend, is among the many prominent figures in Zambian football who took to social media to pay tribute to the late former president.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Zambia’s Sixth Republican President,” Kalusha stated. “President Lungu was not only a statesman but a passionate supporter of football and healthy living.”

Kalusha also praised President Lungu for his consistent support of the national team.

“I fondly remember our long runs together during his ‘Keep Fit’ weekends and his unwavering support for the Chipolopolo,” he added.

Fashion, Daka, Kangwa and others pay tribute to Lungu

Striker Fashion Sakala shared his heartfelt tribute: “President Lungu was more than a leader; he was a father figure to the nation, a man of peace, wisdom, and humility. His love for Zambia and his commitment to unite us will never be forgotten.”

Leicester City striker Patson Daka also honored the late president by posting a photo of him with the caption: “May Your Soul Rest In Peace Your Excellency, until we meet again.”

Midfielder Kings Kangwa expressed his sorrow, writing: “I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Zambia’s 6th Republican President, His Excellency Mr Edgar Lungu. He served our country with humility and love, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of many.”

Meanwhile, former Nkana goalkeeper Scott Ngokene shared a picture of Lungu greeting Nkana players before a match. Now with Kabwe Warriors, Ngokene captioned the photo: “Rest in peace former president of republic of Zambia chafina [it’s heavy].”

Another former Nkana player, Walter Bwalya, also paid tribute by sharing a photo of himself with Lungu on his status.

Former Zanaco, Nkana, and Power Dynamos striker Felix Nyaenda likewise joined in mourning the late president.
