Government Owes Avram Grant Over K2.6 Million, Confirms Minister Nkandu

The government owes Chipolopolo head coach Avram Grant more than K2.6 million in unpaid salary, a debt Nkandu says they are committed to settling, despite recent budget cuts caused by the country’s response to a severe drought.

The government owes Chipolopolo head coach Avram Grant over K2.6 million, an amount Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu says it is committed to settling.

Grant, who earns a monthly salary of around US$25,000, is among the lowest-paid national team coaches on the African continent.

According to the agreement between the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) and the government, the state contributes US$10,000 monthly, while FAZ covers the balance.

Nkandu has confirmed in an interview with Lusaka Radio that the government owes Grant about US$ 100,000.

“We are owing close to about US$100,000; very soon we have started the process of sorting the funds,” Nkandu said.

Nkandu attributed the delay to the slashed budget as a result of the drought the country experienced.

“So you find that 80,000,000 was cut so that we can now facilitate and help those that were hungry, so that they don’t die from hunger.

“Now this is where we have issues because that 8,000,000 would have used that 8,000,000 to pay those that we are owing because we are also owing some athletes,” Nkandu said.
