Avram Grant, the former Chelsea FC, and Ghana national team coach was unveiled by the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) on Thursday as the new head coach of the Chipolopolo Boys on a two-year deal with an option for an extension.
After the news of the 67-year-old gaffer taking the head coaching job in Zambia broke, it sparked comments from all over the world, and many football fans took to social media to share their opinions on the same.
Grant previously managed Ghana from 2014 to 2017, leading them to the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final, where they lost to Ivory Coast, and a semifinal appearance at the 2017 edition. This is his second time managing an African national team.
However, multiple Ghanaians also took to social media to highlight the former English Premier League side, West United FC manager’s flaws and strengths.
Rohi Horticulture (@kofiofei1) wrote on twitter: “One thing Zambia is assured…. The team will rise again… But know that Avram doesn’t win titles.”
Another one obr3fuor nkae(@Kojoooooooo01) also wrote: “The only coach that sent Ghana to finals Afcon. 2015 . To me the best. Don’t know why we sacked him. Can someone tell me why, please?”
Melusi Mkwebu(@MMkwebu) from Ghana tweeted: “Avram Grant he has good record. That’s good news for Zambia.”
Nicholas Kiva(@Pakela_kiva) was another Ghanianian who wrote: “What has he got to offer Zambia football, haba Zambia, this is taking 15 years back of your football. I mean , the guy was just lucky with the Champions league after that, he got sacked by his friend and no success at both West Harm and Portsmouth. Why now.”
Grant’s first game in charge of the Zambia national team will be at home against Lesotho in March in the qualifier for the 2023 Cup of Nations to be held in Ivory Coast.
He replaced Croatian gaffer, Aljosa Asanovic, who resigned over alleged non-payment of salary arrears.
