Five lessons Zambia can draw from Mauritania’s performance vs Argentina

Despite the defeat, Mauritania's head coach Aritz López Garai has a lot of positives to draw from the contest, some of which could inspire Zambia, who take on Argentina next.

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina claimed a 2-1 victory over Mauritania during an international friendly played at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

The hosts went ahead in the 17th minute through Enzo Fernandez, who dispatched his shot into the bottom left corner after meeting a cutback from Nahuel Molina. At 32 minutes, Nicolas Paz stepped up to take a direct freekick in Lionel Messi’s absence and curled it into the back of the net as his captain applauded from the bench.

Mauritania showed resilience and determination in the second half, giving the world champions a run for their money. They were rewarded at the death when Jordan Lefort thumped the ball past Emi Martinez after Argentina failed to clear their lines from a freekick in the 94th minute.

Despite the defeat, Mauritania’s head coach Aritz López Garai has a lot of positives to draw from the contest, some of which could inspire Zambia, who take on Argentina next.

BolaNews outlines five key lessons George Lwandamina’s Chipolopolo Boys can take ahead of a clash against Albiceleste.

Defensive structure and organization is non-negotiable

Garai deployed a 4-4-2 formation when Mauritania were out of possession, avoiding an ultra-defensive back-five system that would have otherwise left them a man short in midfield. The team stayed compact, forcing Argentina to rotate the ball at the back or play it wide.

Additionally, the midfielders dropped to cover the gaps in the backline when the fullbacks went out wide to press the opposition wingers. This made it difficult for elite playmakers like Messi to exploit dangerous areas in defense as they were often crowded out.

Press with purpose, not panic

Mauritania demonstrated top-notch tactical discipline. They maintained their shape and pressed proactively only when necessary. Their selective pressing helped them conserve energy for counter attacks and denied Argentina of the spaces that might have opened under intense pressure.

Garai’s side pressed as a collective unit, closing passing lanes and covering each other to regain possession and create chances.

Quality on the ball matters

The most impressive part of Mauritania’s outing vs Argentina was how they used the ball when they got back possession. Their composure, ball control and dribbling frustrated the 2022 FIFA World Cup winners.

Garai’s men did not just launch the ball forward aimlessly but played it out from the back even under pressure and ran with the ball into Argentina’s half. This allowed them to reach spaces where they could test the opposition defence and forced Albiceleste into giving away fouls in dangerous areas.

Confidence is everything, don’t fear the opponent

Mauritania were mentally prepared for the match and were not intimidated by the quality of players on the opposite end of the pitch. Despite lining up against the likes of Messi, Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, Enzo Fernandez, Emi Martinez, Rodrigo de Paul, they played with remarkable confidence and mental fortitude.

Be clinical, take your chances

The only downside of Mauritania’s performance against Argentina was their failure to make the most of the openings they created in the final third.

However, the North Africans did take their golden chance when it arrived, punishing the South Americans for defending a setpiece poorly. As Zambia prepares to face Albiceleste on March 31 at the same venue, Lwandamina will need to ensure that his Copper Bullets convert opportunities, particularly from the dead-ball situations.
